SOKE KUGEL SEMINAR REVIEW
By
Chris M. Suboreau
On October 12th and 13th, 2013 the Williams Martial Arts Academy hosted Soke Keith Kugel, founder of Kemjukido and President of Genesis Martial Arts International, for a two-day seminar.
The seminar was a rare look into the life’s work of a martial arts Grandmaster. The awe inspiring skill of Master Kugel matches anything I have seen in over 40 years in the arts. His incredible power, precision, and control leaves nothing to chance once combat begins.
This man has spent over 35 years under the tutelage of the best masters he could find. He has mastered the traditional arts, as passed down to him, and then stripped away any weak points he found along the way. He simplified material that appeared to be complex and strengthened components wherein he had located gaps. The result of this distillation process is his unique blend of styles into a powerful, efficient self-defense art that commands our respect.
The seamless and smooth flow of offensive and control moves was broken down into easy to learn segments. Soke Kugel explained the concepts behind each technique, along with key transitions and timing intervals. I was left with a new outlook on the martial arts and an injection of inspiration.
Soke Kugel and his wife Jean, who also doubled as his demonstration partner, are the very finest sort of ambassadors of the martial arts, as well as, extremely effective teachers.
I highly recommend that anyone attend Soke Kugel’s seminars. Our group, The Visayan Eskrima Guild traveled over 300 miles for the event and felt it was well worth it. It is always a pleasure to support a true gentleman, and fellow brother-in-arms of the martial arts.
